Writing this post to express how i felt about a recent convo my uncle had with my mum and she came and ask me about it.
in my mum's extended side, only my big uncle is the only ntu graduate from decades ago. my sis is the very first among our cousin to enter into ntu. i believe that more of our younger cousins will be doing the same since now that it is like a minimum requirement in sg to get a degree. but in anw, my uncle was telling mum that my bro, who is to come to ntu to study mech engine that the future job prospect for it is not good. my uncle was also a mech engine graduate from ntu many years ago but has been out of job once and managed to find one after many attempts. he says study business is better with more prospects.
So my mum told me about it. immediately i dont agree with what my big uncle told her. to me was like prospect is not so important, well perhaps not completely unimportant but to a small extend. if this course has better prospect, then you study this as to follow the trend, burying your interest or ur strength for other courses, i think it is an absolute agony case base on my opinion and experience.
i am more fortunate in a sense that i often get to have my own say in deciding my education path and my parents are supportive. i am also blessed to know where my interest lies. EEE is not easy to study, even with my interest in it, at times i just feel like giving up due to how education is carried out over here. but it is also that interest and my passion to pursue a career in aerospace that has pulled me through the last two sem. besides that, i have supportive friends to push me through.
so i just told my mum to just let my brother choose what he like to study. it serves no purpose to do something that you have no interest and worst still, when you know where your interest lies already.
i do understand the difficulty of finding job especially i just had my experience in applying for the internship. it is so competitive that out of so many submissions of resume.. we call that mass send out of our resume, i only got job offer from two companies. i have nv mass sent my resume before and after this experience, i truly understand how difficult it is to find job now. but i am really blessed because i am also recommended to do intern in st aero and both the school and st aero has approved for me under self sourcing category.
Still, my take is to study whatever you like. the degree over here is quite versatile as well. i could have taken up a business degree but i knew myself pretty well i am not cut out to do business course here. i think it will be worst off than doing eee for me :P
Hey! but i also do understand where my uncle is coming from. it is also out of concern that he brought up this point to my mum. he definitely has more experience. for me, perhaps i still in my naive mode about job hunting and ideal world bah. hahas. who knows that perhaps my thinking might change a few years down the road with different encounter and experience. :)
